How to choose the right ski gear for you? – Part 1

by Annie Krumova on October 22, 2020
One of the most important things for having a flawless holiday is definitely choosing the right ski equipment for you. There are quite a lot of things to consider before making the step to buy something. And this is not something minor for your budget, before purchasing this kind of gear. We will shortly go through several points, which will guide you and help you to pick up the exact skis and clothes for your winter vacation.
Of course I decided to start with the skis. There are so many different kinds, brands and lengths. But which one will suit you best?
The skis should be chosen first of all according to your level – if you are a beginner, intermediate or expert. There are several criteria that you have to comply with.
If you have never tried skis before or you just started skiing, the length of the skis should be a little bit shorter, than your height. Not only the height, but the weight is also a factor, when making a choice. So if you are lighter than average for your height, the skis again should be shorter.

The width of the skis also matters. What I mean by this?  The measurement at a ski’s width at the middle (waist) of the ski, which is usually the narrowest point. Narrower waist widths are quicker edge to edge during turns, while wider waist widths provide better flotation in powder and better cut through the crud. This is more important for the terrain that you will pick up than the level itself.
Something else which is specific, relates again to the type of terrain, and is a common characteristic of the skis – this is the Camber and Rocker profile. Camber profile is the curvature of the base on the skis from the tip to the tail. Those type of skis are more appropriate for the well-groomed slopes. Rocker (also called reverse-camber) is just as it sounds – camber turned upside down. The skis are usually wider, made to float nicely in a powder.

So far so good! We covered the main points, that you can use as a base of buying the best skis for you! Of course, there are many other additional details that should be reviewed and considered as well, which I will cover in my next article!
