Ski tuning - how to take care of your winter gear

by Traventuria Customer Services on November 16, 2020
Keeping your gear tuned and in shape is one of the most important things.
If you ever tried skiing with bad waxed or poorly maintained skis, you know that taking care of your winter gear is a top priority. Not only this helps you preserving your skis or snowboard, but also well-tuned skis will give you better grip and will help you slide better. In this way you will be able to unroll the maximum of your skiing abilities.

Why servicing your gear is so important?
When your skis are waxed and the edges are sharpened, this will provide you with better feel and better edge grip. And not only this – regular waxing the skis, will prevent appearing rust over the edges and in this way your skis will last much longer.
- Improved turning qualities = more fun and faster learning results.
- Better grip on hard slopes = increased safety
- Easier turning on the edge = CARVING
- Edges remain sharper for a longer period of time

How often you should service your gear?
One simple example – your skis are like your car. As you know, the more you drive it, more often it should be taken care of in order to function properly. It is the same with the skis. It is good to service them fully in the beginning of the winter season - this includes repairing the base (if needed), sharpening the edges, waxing, and having your bindings checked. It will be good sometimes to inspect your skis for damage and wear.

Taking your skis to a professional ski shop or waxing them at home?
A lot of people prefer to wax their skis at home, because sometimes professional tuning costs quite a lot. Ski wax is available from most sports stores or online, and it doesn't require the technical expertise or equipment that sharpening the edges does. You can easily wax your skis and take them to the store only when you need your edges done, or some other serious damage should be repaired.

How to take good care of the skis and store them correctly?
During your winter vacation, before you put them on the ski rack after a day in the mountains, take them apart and make sure to remove any excess snow. It will be good if you dry them as well. Drying them off is even more important before storing them for the rest of the year.
